Back in the eighties, when I was a young parent and active on the Board of our fledging Read-Aloud organization, (now Read Aloud West Virginia), I first met Lois Lowry through her Anastasia books and then her TWO Newbery Award winners, NUMBER THE STARS and THE GIVER. And, of course, there was A SUMMER TO DIE, which I've now read at least five times. And AUTUMN STREET and . . . and ... and.... too many to count. And YES, I still OWN a copy of RABBLE STARKEY, which Lowry says is one of her favorites.

I first heard her speak in person at the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh and then again at the Ohio State University Children's Literature Conference and most recently, although not that recently, 8 years ago, when she was the graduation speaker during my first semester at Vermont College. I regularly read her blog. I could listen to her speak for hours. Last night, I had the pleasure of watching an on-line video of her May Hill Arbuthnot lecture, thanks to this link posted by Luann Toth on the School Library Journal site. Do yourself a favor and sit down and watch. The evening apparently began with a children's theater production, so cue the video to 39 min. and 40 sec. for the lecture.
